Ruthven studied at the Cincinnati Art Academy and the Jack Storey Central Academy of Commercial Art. After graduating, he opened a commercial studio and started painting the realistic wildlife portraits he is known for today. Ruthven was a member of the Outdoor Writers Association, the Cincinnati Art Club and Art Director’s Club, the Cincinnati Artist’s Guild, and the National Audubon Society.

- lint residue along top edge of frame; minor wear to gilt across frame; small nick to frame near center of right edge of frame; small tears to backing paper; separation to frame at bottom left corner; scuff to frame at bottom right corner.
