The inscription, a quote by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, is on the perimeter of the canvas and reads: ‘Nur der verdient sich Freiheit wie das Leben, Der täglich sie erobern muss.’ which translates to ‘Only he deserves freedom like life, who has to conquer it every day.’

- large tear in backing paper along bottom edge; scratch to paint on canvas; minor wear to corners of frame
