A pair of architectural interest books from the library of Cincinnati architect, John Becker, well known for his early Modern residential designs including the recently-restored Rauh House in Woodlawn. The pair includes ‘Survival Through Design’ by Richard Neutra (designer of the Bizzarri House in Blue Ash), published by Oxford University Press in 1954 and signed with pencil and dated Feb 1954 by John Becker. This seminal book features Neautra’s musings, advice, and theories on design in the living and work space. Bound in a lovely tan spine with ochre colored cloth covered boards, 384 pages and sewn binding. Also included is ‘American Building, The Forces that Shape it’ by James Marston Fitch and published by Houghton Mifflin Company of Boston in 1948. An influential book that provided a fresh perspective on the history of American architecture/building and includes inserts with 177 photographs and illustrations. Bound in off white cloth with embossed lettering to front and spine. Contains John Becker’s pencil signature to first page. Both books are first editions.

Condition

- “Survival through Design” is in excellent condition with minimal stains to spine and some marking to edges. American Building shows tearing to top of spine with some ink smudging to pages and library envelope to back of front cover and marks to edges.
