Saint Ignatius of Loyola (1491–1556) was a Basque Spaniard Catholic priest and theologian, and founder of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) in 1540. Originally a soldier, he turned to religious life after an injury and developed the ‘Spiritual Exercises.’ He played a key role in the Catholic Counter-Reformation and was canonized as a saint in 1622.
