Sister Mary Corita Kent was a Catholic nun in the Order of the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. She played an important role in the Pop Art movement, her work mainly using the serigraph method of printing due to her belief that art should be available for the people. She taught at the Immaculate Heart College in Los Angeles where her avant-garde classes were a mecca for soon to be prominent artist and thinkers such as Alfred Hitchcock, John Cage, Charles and Ray Eames. While her work is included in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Los Angeles County Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, she may be best known for her design of the United States Postal Service LOVE stamp which has been sold over 700 million times. More recently, Los Angeles is opening The Corita Art Center, an exhibition space dedicated to her work that is scheduled to open in 2020.
