A Margaret Goss Burroughs ( American 1915-2010) lithograph titled Mother of Mankind, signed and dated 4/11/65. The black and white image illustrates the face and shoulders of a woman with plaited hair and cloth draped over one shoulder. Tropical vegetation and primitive grass huts are seen in the background. The print is matted under glass and presented in a black frame. Provenance; The lithograph was purchased from the ArtWorks sale of the Ben and Helen Allen Collection, in 2006.
Margaret Burroughs was known as an African American writer, social activist and artist who co-founded the DuSable Museum of African American History in Chicago, Illinois. She also helped to establish the South Side Community Arts Center, one of the first of its kind, in 1941, which was dedicated by First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. In 1946 and 1948, she received her BA and Masters of Art Education from the Art Institute of Chicago.
Condition
, there is a slight bend (not a crease or wrinkle) in the work on paper in the upper left corner. This does not diminish from the overall appearance and it was purchased in this condition.
