"Red Line" Constructed Painting with Hinged Panel by Sam Gilliam

A Post-painterly abstraction painting with sculptural elements, dated 1995, by renowned African American artist Sam Gilliam (American, 1933), titled Red Line. The dimensional abstract painting is a mixed media piece done on a thick constructed wood panel with a hinged panel at the lower right corner (painted on both sides) and an applied red line in the upper left. Gilliam is a member of the Color-Field School who was inspired by Jackson Pollack and experimented with materials and techniques since the 60s and 70s. According to the artist, ‘Color is the most tantalizing element in painting, but I am very much involved with structure and shape.’ Provenance; the painting was purchased from the ArtWorks sale of the Ben and Helen Allen Collection in 2006.
Sam Gilliam was born in Tupelo, Mississippi then moved to Louisville, Kentucky where he received both his Bachelors and MFA from the University of Louisville. The artist currently lives in Washington, D.C. and works from his studio in the Shaw district. He is well-respected and internationally known with his work represented in museums across the country and in France. This signed three-dimensional work is both signed and dated by the artist at the back.
