Edward T. Hurley Rookwood Pottery Vellum Glazed Vase, 1946

Item Details

A 1946 Rookwood Pottery vellum vase by Rookwood designer E. T. Hurley (American, 1869-1950). The vase, in soft shades of blue, green and cream and in a tapered form with rolled rim, features an atmospheric landscape with a winding placid inlet lined with tall graceful trees to both sides and low hills to the distant horizon. The vase is signed with the artist’s monogram to the verso, also with the Rookwood logo, Roman numeral ‘XLVI’, and marked ‘5280’.

E. T. Hurley studied at Xavier University, then at The Cincinnati Art Academy under the tutelage of Frank Duveneck. Hurley joined the famed Rookwood Pottery in 1896, his work received a gold medal at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis and his pottery and vellum plaques are avidly collected today. A prolific artist outside of his work at Rookwood, Hurley received praise for his printed work and was listed in the French index “The Dictionaire des Peintres, Sculptuers, Dessinateurs et Graveurs Benezit”. He was also a sculptor, working in bronze to create decorative pieces.
