Ikki Matsumoto was born in Tokyo in 1935 as the son of famous Japanese illustrator and manga artist, Katsuji Matsumoto. Ikki Matsumoto spent his early years in Japan until relocating to the United States to attend university in Indiana. In 1957, he transferred to the Art Academy of Cincinnati to study under Charley Harper. After graduating, Matsumoto began his career in advertising. During this time he met his wife, fellow artist Polly Adamson, and the two moved to a farm in Loveland, Ohio to start a family. In 1975, Ikki and his family moved to Florida where he worked as a full-time painter and printmaker. His work garnered attention in the United States and Japan, and by 1985, Matsumoto was chosen by First Lady Nancy Reagan to paint a White House Easter Egg. During the next few years, the family moved back and forth between Ohio and Florida until settling in Florida in 2010. Matsumoto’s work was represented by multiple galleries across the country, as he designed posters for local events, sold commissioned prints, and published illustrations. He followed his mentor, Charley Harper, in becoming a member of the Masterworks for Nature artist group to champion wildlife conservation. Matsumoto worked as an artist until his passing in 2013.
