William Purcell McDonald was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, trained at the Cincinnati Art Academy under Frank Duveneck, and was also a member of the Cincinnati Art Club. McDonald is best known as a painter and sculptor for Rookwood Pottery. McDonald was promoted to the head of Rookwood’s architectural department in 1904 and remained in that role until he died in 1931.
Examples of McDonald’s work for Rookwood are held in most major museums throughout the United States, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. McDonald wasn’t recognized as an accomplished painter until appreciation for his art independent of his Rookwood affiliation accelerated in the late 20th century.
