Item Details

A stunning rare pair of 19th century ‘Jackfield’ black glaze Staffordshire dogs, with gold gilt handpainted trim. The dogs are pottery made and have a small firing hole in center of the back. They are a matched set and date roughly to the 1870s. Jackfield first developed this style in the 1740s and it was at its most popular in the 1750s and 1760s, but several versions continued to be made in small amounts well into the 19th century. Jackfield-type glazing experienced a revival in the 1870s and 1880s, but this time being produced on a terra cotta or white earthenware body. The Staffordshire dogs again grew in popularity at the time of the death of the beloved Prince Albert, Queen Victoria’s husband. It is sometimes known as Jet Ware.
