Antique Oil on Canvas of a Dog and Child
Item Details
An antique oil on canvas features a large, black and white Newfoundland type of dog with a small girl in his lap, rescued from the ocean. The painting appears to be a copy of Sir Edwin Henry Landseer’s ‘Saved’ (1856), a classic depiction of Milo, the lighthouse dog from Egg Rock, Nahant. The dog in this painting has such a hopeful expression, one is compelled not to think the worst of this moment captured so long ago. The painting’s depth allows one to view out over the ocean to a dark horizon dotted with birds and golden openings in the blackened sky juxtaposed with a green ocean and boat. The frame is gilded with an impressive very thick wood base and elaborate floral and leaf gesso plaster ornamentation. There is an apparent artist’s signature on the lower right corner, covered by the frame, ‘MnK’. Please preview for assessment.

consistent with age. Some area where paint is bubbling. The painting is in need of a professional cleaning and what a treasure to restore.
