Kiyonaga Torii Japanese Woodcut Reproduction
Item Details
A vintage reproduction of an original Japanese woodcut attributable to Torii Kiyonaga (1752 – June 28, 1815). This woodcut was likely reproduced in either the 1930s or 1970s, also possibly more recently. Although it is a reproduction this woodcut has been faithfully mimicked, the skillful hands of an artisan cutting entirely new blocks, faithful in size and skill to the originals. Kiyonaga was a painter and Ukiyo-e printmaker of the Torii school. Kiyonaga is considered one of the great masters of nishiki-e and bijin-ga which frequently depicted beautiful women and courtesans. This print could be considered a shunga print although its nature is not solely erotic. This print is entitled ‘Bathhouse Women,’ and depicts several nude women going about their business in the bathhouse, while a very naughty voyeuristic bathhouse attendant is peeking in. The print bears Kiyonaga’s chop mark to the lower left and is presented in a simple black wooden frame with double matting to edge.
