A decision document related to a customs issue signed by Hamilton as Secretary of the Treasury of the United States. Folio with letter folds and affixed U.S. Treasury seal; countersignature to reverse quadrant; Britannia watermark. A facsimile photocopy of the document is included in this lot.

Transcription: ‘To all of whom these presents shall come, I Alexander Hamilton Secretary of the Treasury of the United States Send Greeting. Whereas a statement of facts with the Petition of John Curtis of Portland, Maine, thereto annexed touching a certain penalty incurred under the Statue of the United States entitled ’An Act for enrolling and licensing Ships or Vessel to be employed in the Coasting trade and Fisheries and for regulating the same’ was on the sixth day of December last past + transmitted to me the said Secretary of the Treasury by direction of the Judge of the United States for the District of Maine; pursuant to the State of the United States entitled ‘An Act to provide for mitigating or unmitting the Penalties accruing under the Revenue Laws in certain cases there in mentioned’ as by the Said Statement of facts and Petition remaining in the Treasury Department of the United States may fully appear. And whereas I the said Secretary of the Treasury have naturally considered the said Statement of facts + Petition. For that no sufficient excuse is shown that the said Penalty was incurred without wilful negligence or any intention of fraud. Now therefore Know ye that I the said Secretary of the Treasury in consideration of the Premises and by Virtue of the power + authority to my given by the said last mentioned Statute have decided to remit and by these presents do remit to the said John Curtis all the right claim + demand of the United States and all others whomever to the said Penalty be the said John Curtis first paying Twenty Dollars for benefit of parties other than the United States interested therein together with all reasonable Costs attending the proceeding in the Premises to be assigned by the Judge of the District aforesaid. Given under my hand + Seal of Office in the City of Philadelphia in the State of Pennsylvania this Twenty Second day of January in the year of our Lord Seventeen Hundred Ninety five and in the Nineteenth Year of the Independence of the United States.
