A Pair of Magnificent 19th Century Carved White Marble Lions

A magnificent pair of 19th century Italian white marble lions, Romanesque in style, and recumbent in pose with skillfully executed features. Their full manes have softened from years of exposure in the garden and their expressions are personified due to deeply furrowed brows and mouths agape with fangs exposed. The lions rest on paws with carved claws, their tails are closely tucked against the body. Each sculpture rests on a plinth that is then inset on a custom made concrete base to fortify the ancient marble and elevate the lions.

- for age and outdoor exposure. The back edge of one concrete base has broken off.
