An Important Albert Paley Exterior Steel Sculpture, "Proscenium"

Item Details

An important Albert Paley exterior sculpture in formed and fabricated steel titled Proscenium. The striking outdoor piece is an abstract composition with scrolling ribbon atop diagonal feathers which intersect a vertical rectangular frame or curtain stage, if you will. The sculpture has a dynamic flow yet is elegant and compatible with the natural surroundings, largely due to the soft matte finish. The sculpture is signed at the base and dated 2007; it was installed in 2008. Albert Paley (born 1944) earned his Bachelor of Fine Art from the Tyler School of Art at Temple University in Philadelphia and he is considered to be among the most important contemporary artists today. He began his career as a metalsmith designing jewelry then starting working with wrought iron in the 1970s which led him to creating larger sculpture. Paley has been working as an active artist in his Rochester, New York studio for forty years and was the first metal sculptor to receive the coveted ‘Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Institute of Architects, the AIA’s highest award to a non-architect. Paley has created over fifty site-specific sculptures plus thirteen monumental abstract forms that were displayed up and down Park Avenue in New York for the city’s largest (literally) public art display in 2013. His work is included in the permanent collection of numerous art institutions to include: the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and at the Jewish Community Center in Cincinnati.
