Oak High Boy Dresser
Item Details
An early 20th century Larkin Soap Company oak wood high boy/ chiffonier. A handsome piece it’s case housing five stacked dovetail constructed drawers. To drawer front original brass cast loop bail hard ware with opulent pierced foliage back plates, key echelons to center; no key present. It’s protruding top adorns a shaped back gallery with an applied wreath motif to center. The case retains a partial manufacturer label indicating the ‘Larkin Soap Company’.
John D. Larkin established the Larkin Company in 1875, originally making soap, the large yellow bars worked well on the wooden washboards of the day. The company used it’s premiums to promote pottery and oak furniture and became one of the first mail ordering companies, Larkin factory to family dealing. The company ceased trading in 1940.
