Anne Siems was born in Berlin in 1965. There, she attended the Hochschule der Künste with an exchange year at the University of the South on a Fulbright Scholarship. Siems graduated with an MFA in 1991, and moved to Seattle to become a full-time artist. Her work was heavily influenced by Old Master techniques and German, bucolic scenery. The small scale of her Seattle studio led her to create smaller, mixed media works on paper. Her creative work took a significant turn at the height of Trump’s presidency, and after suffering a back injury in 2020. Siems’ previous style was abruptly transformed into work of urgency. Navigating ideas of feminism and the human experience, Siems began painting tattooed female figures with shaved heads, citing an interest in the middle-ground between terror and beauty. Deeply touched by the work of German poet, Rainer Maria Rilke, the tattoos allow Siems to incorporate writing into the visual. Alongside her creative practices, Siems has been teaching art in universities throughout the northwest, including Seattle’s Pratt Institute, and the Oregon College of Art and Craft. Her work has been exhibited in solo and group shows since the mid-1980s, and is included in various collections such as Boise Art Museum, Idaho; Tacoma Art Museum, Washington; Microsoft Collection and the private collection of Lucy Liu.
