Best known for her Impressionist and Expressionist works, Jane Peterson was an influential painter of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. She was born in Elgin, Illinois to a supportive family who encouraged her fine arts education at Pratt Institute in New York. She continued her studies at the Art Students League and eventually became an instructor. She traveled extensively throughout her artistic career and was influenced by many of her contemporaries at home and abroad. During 1938, she was elected as the “outstanding individual of the year” by the American Historical Society. Along with being exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions, Peterson’s work is represented in many private and public collections including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Hirshorn, and the Brooklyn Museum.
