A gelatin silver print titled Cypress, Point Lobos taken in 1930 by renowned American photographer Edward Weston (1886-1958). The work depicts a Monterey Cypress, capturing the twists of the branches and patterns of the wood grain. Close-ups were an important part of the artist’s work at this time with the focus on the lines and texture of natural objects. The Point Lobos area was a favorite of Weston’s, drawing on the landscape’s formations of rock, sand, surf, and trees. This photograph was printed by the artist’s son, Brett Weston, in 1955. The print is dry-mounted on paperboard backing and to the verso is the artist’s stamp and signature ‘Brett Weston.’ Additionally, it is editioned 4 of 8, titled, and inscribed to the verso. The work is presented matted under glazing in an acrylic frame.
Considered one of the masters of 20th-century photography, Weston’s photographic oeuvre includes a variety of genres; however, he is perhaps most celebrated for his images of the American West and abstract imagery. Significantly, he was the first photographer to receive a Guggenheim Fellowship, and was friends with a number of influential artists such as Alfred Stieglitz, Paul Strand, Charles Sheeler, Georgia O’Keeffe, Diego Rivera, David Siqueiros, Jose Orozco, and his lover Tina Modotti, to name a few. His work has been exhibited and collected by countless institutions including the International Center of Photography; the Museum of Modern Art; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the Tate; and the Smithsonian Institution, among many others.
