Guy Gladwell was born in Nairobi, Kenya in 1946. In the mid-1950s, his family moved to Jersey, Channel Islands where Gladwell began to study art under Sir Claude Francis Barry. He then continued on to study at Bournemouth Art College, and later studied anatomy at Sir John Cass School of Art. Gladwell quickly gained attention for his seascape paintings, and moved to London in 1969 to be closer to the art scene. A year later he was picked up by Nicholas Treadwell Gallery, and also built a relationship in New York at Arnot Gallery. For the next two decades Gladwell exhibited widely across Europe and the UK, then chose to settle near coastal Aldeburgh for inspiration.
