Czech sculptor Antonín Pavel Wagner was born in 1834. He grew up in a family of textile workers and followed their footsteps as a canvas merchant in Prague after finishing secondary school. In 1851, Wagner left the textile industry to study sculpture with Josef Max, working as his studio assistant for the next six years. Wagner then enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna to study sculpture in 1857. He remained in Vienna for most of his career with commissions for monumental statues of writers and dramatists, political figures such as Herbard VIII von Augsberg as well as allegorical statues. Wagner’s sculptures won awards at the 1873 Vienna World’s Fair and the 1878 Exposition Universelle in Paris. He was a member of the Academy of Fine Arts, Prague and the Czech Academy of Sciences and Arts.
