William Joseph Carroll was born in Great Britain in 1842. Though little is known about his personal life, Carroll created a large collection of oil and watercolor paintings. Many of these are portraits of young women surrounded by flowers, most likely attributing symbolic character traits to the visual portrait, an art historical tradition tracing back to the Renaissance.
