Dale Patrick Chihuly was born in Tacoma, Washington and currently practices and lives within the same state. Chihuly found an interest in glass while studying interior design at the University of Wisconsin and upon graduating in 1965, attended the first glass program in the country. He continued his studies, established a glass program, and taught for more than ten years at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). It was in the late 1960s, while studying at the Veni glass factory in Venice, Italy through a Fulbright Fellowship, that Chihuly observed the team approach to blowing glass. He went on to co-found the Pilchuck Glass School in Washington State in 1971. Chihuly’s works are included in over 200 museum collections worldwide.
