Italo Scanga was a renowned neo-dadaist multimedia artist who was born in Italy in 1932, and emigrated with his family to the United States in 1947. He worked at General Motors and served in the United States Army before studying at Michigan State University, earning both a bachelor’s degree and a Masters of Fine Arts in sculpture. Scanga was a frequent guest artist, working with famed glass artist Dale Chihuly at the Pilchuck Glass School in Washington, and taught at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, the Rhode Island School of Design and the Tyler School of Art at Temple University in Philadelphia before settling at the University of California in San Diego in 1976. He has had numerous solo exhibitions, including at the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Museum of Fine Art, Boston. His work resides in the permanent collections of Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Art Institute of Chicago.
