Original T.J. Willison Oil on Board

Item Details

An original oil on board painting by very well listed Ohio artist Thomas Jefferson Willison (1864 – 1940). The artist grew up in Brent, KY, working for his father’s lumber company. Later on the artist worked in Cincinnati around the same time as Frank Duveneck, perhaps the most revered Cincinnati painter. Willison’s most famous and well-regarded paintings are intimate portraitures of the landscapes surrounding the Miami and Ohio River valleys (via askart). The rolling valleys and hilltops that define the landscape are subjects that hallmark the artist’s deliberate style. This is an excellent example of the artist’s extremely fine work. A small body of water slips between two small knolls. A farmhouse is obscured, beautiful and sterling, burning like a memory of pastoralism in the distance, painted as if it were seen through bleary eyes lightly pelted by the rain. The style is utterly suggestive, convulsively gestural, shrouded with thick, heavy nostalgia. It’s easy to see Willison’s deep love for the geographically meritorious landscape surrounds the Ohio Valley. The sentimentality is herein pronounced, thoroughly articulated, and easy for anyone who calls this place home to understand. The painting is signed by the artist to the lower left-hand corner, and is presented in a fine gilded wooden frame (seemingly wax coated) with delicate ornamentation in low relief all around the edge. A fine masterwork of painterly exuberance and strength. An extremely commendable addition to any collection of fine art, with particular significance for the Cincinnati collector.
