After being discharged from the military in 1945, White went to New York and studied with renowned art historian Meyer Schapiro. While in New York, he became acquainted with photographers Edward Weston, Paul Strand, and Alfred Stieglitz, all of whom had a profound influence on his work. In 1946, the artist began working under Ansel Adams as a photography instructor at the California School of Fine Arts. He and Adams founded Aperture magazine in 1952, along with Dorothea Lange, Barbara Morgan, and the Newhalls. For the following four years, White worked at the George Eastman House in Rochester with the Newhalls. His teaching career continued at the Rochester Institute of Technology and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
