Little is known about James H. Kimberly except that he worked both as a portrait painter and miniaturist in New Haven, Connecticut and in New York between 1841 – 1844. He died in 1846. John Meriman was a farmer and resident of New Haven, Connecticut.

Condition

- abrasions and scratches to the frame; board does not fit to the frame, exposed right edge; paint chipping, stains, and scratches throughout, notably to the center; examined under UV light, inpainting present throughout, notably to the right shoulder and upper portion; crackle and craquelure present.
