Based in Andrews, North Carolina, self-taught artist Dean Williams showed an interest in drawing at an early age and began painting at age 18. As a blues enthusiast who owns a music store, his art is very much influenced by music, often featuring recurring themes such as blues musicians, homicidal cowboys, religious folklore, beer bottles, roller coasters, clowns, and monkeys among others. Some artists that have inspired Williams include Paul Klee, Leonora Carrington, and Howard Finster. His acrylic paintings are painted on recycled lumber and various objects found in thrift stores. Many of his pieces include esoteric writing that he has overheard, while others feature the artist’s personal notes that serve as his personal diary. As a modest artist, Williams believes art is inseparable from everyday life. While he exhibits his work in his music store, he is just as pleased to have his work displayed in everyday venues such as a barber shop or bar, as he would be to have it displayed in an art gallery.
