Award-winning Chicago-based artist Helen Dannelly is particularly interested in metamorphosis as both a natural and interpersonal phenomenon. Inspired by the natural world, particularly plant and sea life, she creates paintings and sculptures, both abstract and representational. While Dannelly’s realistic paintings render the effects of light, her abstract paintings often resemble water, shadows, branches, and rock stratifications inspired by the landscapes she frequently visited in Ireland. Although her sculptures are abstract, their organic shapes are based on objects in nature. Many of her sculptures are executed in encaustic, a preferred medium of hers due the versatility of the material. In addition, she has created mixed media coral sculptures for The Coral Project, an exhibition reviewed in the Chicago Tribune that highlighted the effects of climate change on coral reefs.

Dannelly studied painting at San Francisco State University and sculpture at the University of Minnesota. Her work has been exhibited at multiple institutions throughout her career, including Slate Contemporary in Oakland, California; Addington Gallery in Chicago; Kolman Pryor Gallery in Minneapolis; and Adam Peck Gallery in Provincetown, Massachusetts, among others. Dannelly is also the co-founder of Catalyst Art Lab, an artists’ community and online art school that offers courses in painting, printmaking, sculpture, digital imagery, and social media marketing.
