American photojournalist John Paul Fusco is particularly known for his photographs of Robert F. Kennedy’s funeral train for which he traveled across the United States on Kennedy’s funeral train in 1968. He is also known for his photographs capturing the toll of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster and the 1966 Delano Grape strike. Before receiving his BFA from Ohio University in 1957, Fusco was a photographer for the United State Army Signals Corps in Korea. His professional photography career began as a photographer for Look magazine where he worked until 1971. For Look he focused on producing images regarding social issues in the United States, such as destitute miners in Kentucky, Latino ghetto neighborhoods in New York City, and African-American life in the Mississippi Delta. In addition, Fusco worked internationally in England, Israel, Egypt, Japan, and the Iron Curtain countries among other countries. After Look had closed down, he became an associate of Magnum Photos where he remained a full member until his death in 2020. Fusco’s work has been published in numerous U.S. magazines including TIME, Newsweek, the New York Times Magazine, and Life among others.
