Born in Illinois, Bruce Davidson has been a member of Magnum Photos since 1958 after working for LIFE magazine. Inspired by the work of Henri Cartier-Bresson and W. Eugene Smith, he studied photography while attending the Rochester Institute of Technology and Yale University. Davidson is particularly known for his photographs that focus on the humanity of unique or alienated individuals and urban subjects including an extensive survey of New York’s subways. In the 1960s, he was the recipient of the Guggenheim Fellowship to photograph moments of the Civil Rights movement, and received the first photography grant from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1967. Davidson’s work has been published in the New York Times, Times Magazine, Esquire, Vogue, and other publications, and has been exhibited and collected by multiple institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, the Walker Art Center, the National Museum of American Art, and the International Center of Photography, among many others.
