Self-taught photographer has been an independent photographer and an associate at Magnum since 1967. He received his BA in History from the University of Chicago where he also served as a staff photographer for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. He has published several photographic books such as The Movement (1964) centered around the Civil Rights movement, The Bikeriders (1968) for which he traveled with the Chicago Outlaws motorcycle club, and Conversation with the Dead (1971) which was a study of Texas prisons. Lyons received Guggenheim Fellowships in both photography and filmmaking. His work has been exhibited and collected by several institutions, including the International Center of Photography, the George Eastman House, and the Whitney Museum of American Art among others.
