Item Details

Untitled, 21st century
Pastel-embellished digital photograph
Unsigned

Pennsylvania-based artist Mark Panza explores themes such as the human figure, natural elements, flora, and modern architecture. His composite photographs are created with digital photography and Apple software, that result in layered imagery, many of which alchemize into sensual, ethereal, and even psychedelic work. Panza shoots his nude models and surrounding environments separately, then converges them into photographs that, when brought together, manifest new original meanings and relationships. While his work is digital, Panza explains that he’s been interested in composite imagery since grade school when he began sandwiching photo negatives together to create double exposures. In addition to the human body and nature, Panza is also compelled by architecture, another theme that he has incorporated in his work, many of which feature angles of geometric architecture. He has exhibited his work at several institutions including the Carnegie Museum of Art, the Hoyt Fine Art Institute, and the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts. For decades, Panza lived in Millvale, Pennsylvania where he owned Panza Gallery; today he lives in Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania.
