A rare London folio edition titled ‘The Turner Gallery: A Series Of Sixty Engravings From The Principal Works Of Joseph Mallord William Turner’, with a memoir and illustrative text by Ralph Nicholson Wornum, Keeper and Secretary, National Gallery. The enormous folio was published in London by James S. Virtue, circa 1865 (no publication date however the later US version was published in 1878 and the inscription is dated). The large folio contains sixty steel engravings after Turner’s work with extensive descriptive text for each plus biographical information. The books inscription on the first facing page reads ‘Richard Sandbach Birch Villa August 10th, 1865’.

  • This item is Ex-Libris, having been stored in a climate controlled facility and is being auctioned to benefit the Cincinnati Art Museum Library.

Condition

, sadly, the book is in poor condition. but many of the steel engravings are salvageable and the text is an invaluable resource. The binding has disintegrated and the boards are damaged. There is foxing and toning throughout out but again, many of the images themselves could be matted and framed.
