Andrei Michailovich Lanskoy was born in Russia in 1902. His family moved from Moscow to St. Petersburg, where he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts. After being injured in the Russian Civil War and forced into exile, Lanskoy settled permanently in Paris in 1921. At this time, his paintings depicted still lifes and figural compositions. In 1923, like most Parisian artists hoping to start their careers, Lanskoy submitted his work to Salon d’Automne and was accepted. Through the exposure from the Salon, Lanskoy’s work was discovered by the German art collector, critic, and dealer, Wilhelm Uhde. Uhde was a prominent figure in the arts who helped foster the career of artists such as Henri Rousseau. For the next couple of years, Uhde was the primary collector of Lanskoy’s output, and his influence and connections led to Lanskoy’s first solo exhibition in 1925 at Galerie Bing. Towards the late 1930s, Lanskoy’s paintings slowly transitioned towards nonrepresentational art, and he became a forerunner to the Parisian abstract art movement “Tachisme.” Lanskoy’s work began to receive international recognition after the French art dealer, Louis Carré, held a major solo exhibition in his gallery named Lanskoy, Oeuvres 1944-1948.

By the time of the artist’s passing in 1976, his work had been exhibited at galleries including Arthur Tooth and Sons, London; Svens-Franska Gallery, Stockholm; and Albert Loeb Gallery, New York. Lanskoy’s art is housed in numerous permanent collections including Musée National d’Art Moderne, Paris; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; and the Museum of Modern Art of Antwerp.
