"Gazette du Bon Genre", 1921 French Art Deco Magazines, No. 4,5,6

Item Details

A lot of ‘Gazette Du Bon Genre’, 1921 issue No. 4, 5 and 6, the premier French Art Deco fashion magazine from the 1920s, translated as ‘The Journal of Good Taste’. This American version of ‘Gazette du Bon Ton’, was distributed by Conde Nast in the United States. The French magazine was founded by Lucien Vogel and was created to appeal to an elite audience with refined taste in all things, especially fashion. Fashion was perceived as an art form and therefore treated as such. The magazine was only available to subscribers at 100 francs annually, equivalent to $450 today. The exclusive magazine set itself apart from others by representing the finest couture houses (Jacques Doucet, Charles Worth, Jeanne Pacquin, Paul Poiret, etc.), printing on fine paper and employing the Art Deco artists of the time. The artist not only illustrated the clothing, but represented the models in dramatic settings. The printing method popular in France in the early 1900s was ‘Pochoir’ which was a manual, time consuming stenciling process that was slow but created vivid images due to the use of gouache as the ink. The combination of employing this process, using good ink and fine papers ensures vivid images that are highly desirable and collected today.
These three volumes include full page fashion advertisements from artists: Andre Edouard Marty (French 1882-1974), George Barbier (French 1882-1932), Pierre Brissaud (French 1885-1964), Edouard Benito (Spain 1891-1981), Fernand Simeon (Spain 20th century), George lepape (French 1887-1971) Charles Martin (French 1884-1934) and others. A favorite image in volume No. 6 being the woodcut pochoir (unsigned) illustrating models wearing swimsuits with bright fuchsia flowers and another in the same volume, the pistachio green dress with draped ribbons at the wrist by designer Lanvin. Simply delicious! There are approximately 25 plates in these issues.
