Cincinnati-based artist Marlene VonHandorf Steele grew up in a German community of Covington, Kentucky. Much of her youth was spent in church, surrounded by the ecclesiastical arts of architecture, paintings, sculptures, and music. She began her art studies early, attending lessons by Aileen McCarthy at 10 years old. McCarthy was a pupil of Frank Duveneck whose secular work Steele first encountered on a trip to the Kenton County Public Library. Steele’s consistent encounter with the arts brought her to the Art Academy of Cincinnati where she majored in painting. After graduating, Steele worked at H. & S. Pogue Company as a sign painter, and then continued on to work at Gibson’s Greeting, Inc. as a calligraphist for nearly a decade. Further into her career, Steele bought a manufacturing site and renovated the building to rent out artist studios. Her mature work consists of plein air paintings and portraiture, and her work is favored for the rendering of light and anatomy. She is the Vice President of the Cincinnati Art Club, and co-founder of the Greater Cincinnati Calligraphers’ Guild. Her work has been exhibited across the tri-state area, and won numerous awards including the Individual Excellence Award from the Ohio Arts Council.
