Pierre Auguste Renoir Restrike Etching, "Le Chapeau"
Item Details
An ebullient restrike etching, from the original plate, by Pierre Auguste Renoir (France, 1841 – 1919), titled ‘Le Chapeau Epingle’ sweetly and gingerly depicting a pair of young girls, each in hats, one pinning the hat of the other. Quite beautiful, a good impression, in Renoir’s classic and inimitable hand; this portrait of Julie Manet (Berthe Morisot’s daughter, and Edouard Manet’s niece) and her cousin was originally published in Gustave Geffroy’s ‘La Vie Artistique,’ 3rd Series (Paris, 1894). Signed in the plate, printed on a lightly textured paper, the piece is housed in a gilt and ebonized wooden molding frame with woven cotton matting. A certificate of authenticity from an unidentified source is attached to the verso.
