Richard Hayley Lever was born in Adelaide, Australia in 1876. He showed an early interest in art, studying painting under James Ashton at Prince Alfred College and at Ashton’s independent art school. He spent 12 years in England, furthering his formal training and living at the St. Ives artists’ colony in Cornwall. During this time, Lever would begin to create his seascapes and landscapes he is known for. In 1911, Lever moved to New York where he would gain a following and eventually teach at the Art Students League in 1931. Lever’s works can be found in major institutions including The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and The New Britain Museum of Art to name a few.
