American photographer, screenwriter, and director Tyler Shields is known for his provocative and controversial imagery, much of which features celebrities. Referred to as “Hollywood’s favorite photographer”, he began his career as a professional inline skater before moving to L.A. at age 18 to pursue photography. It was in L.A. that he began to understand the celebrity concept and the power of social media. Some of Shields’ reoccurring themes include torture, decadence, and eroticism, to name a few. His photos often feature a Hyperrealist aesthetic with Surrealist, chaotic, and even bizarre content. Shields credits Fraser Kee Scott from A Gallery for discovering his work on MySpace. His photographs gained so much recognition that people were not only buying his photographs, they wanted to be featured in them. Throughout his career, he has published several photo books and has directed multiple films such as Final Girl (2015), Outlaw (2016), and The Cold Killer (2020). His work has been exhibited and collected by numerous institutions, including Imitate Modern, Miller Gallery, and Provocateur Gallery, among others.
