Noel Quintavalle was born in Ferrara, Italy in 1893. He was a self-taught painter with a degree in architecture. His early work followed the late 19th century movement of divisionism, which was a technique within neo-impression and parallel to pointillism. Rather than focusing on the brushwork, divisionism used dotting of paint in a practice of color theory. After serving in the Great War, Quintavalle made his artistic debut at the Brera Biennale in 1918 and continued to exhibit his work in national and international shows. Over the span of his career, Quintavalle adjusted his divisionist technique by incorporating the Old Master technique of glazing. While still applying the primary layer in dotted, separated colors, Quintavalle topped each composition with glazing to create the optic illusion of shading. Quintavalle painted still lifes, landscapes, and figural paintings, the most notable being the recurring subject of ballerinas.
