Additional Information | Included in the collection is an MSA (Mine Safety Appliances Co. of Pittsburgh) Skullgard “Type K” miner’s helmet. The helmet is attributed to a crew member working on the Pennsylvania Turnpike tunnel projects in the early-to-mid 20th century. Handwritten inscription to the exterior of the helmet reads “Jos C. Korte/ Penn. Turnpike Comm./ Laurel Hill Tunnel” and underside brim and interior label of the helmet inscribed “Korte”. The Laurel Hill Tunnel opened in 1940 and later bypassed and abandoned in 1964. |
