Andrew T. Schwartz first studied art in his home town of Louisville, Kentucky, before attending the Cincinnati Art Academy in 1890, where he studied under renowned Cincinnati artist Frank Duveneck (1848 -1919). He went on to study at the Art Students League in New York, under H. Siddons Mowbray (1858 – 1928), and was awarded the Lazarus Scholarship for mural painting which enabled him to study throughout Europe for three years. He returned to New York, and completed many important murals, including Christ the Good Shepard for a church in Vermont, regarded as a premiere example of mural painting at the time, as well as commissions for the the Courthouse of New York, the New York YMCA, the Atkins Museum of Fine Art in Kansas City and the Kansas City Life Insurance Company Building. He was also known for his figure and landscape paintings, which he exhibited at major institutions, including the National Academy of Design, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh, and he was a member of the Salmagundi Club and the National Society of Mural Painters, among other important institutions.

- wear, chipping, and fraying to edges; canvases have been re-stretched and relined; in-painting and overpainting; large canvas patches and repairs; slight relief in canvas where it has been repaired; cracks; some chipping and loss; dust, debris, and some discoloration.
