Painter and illustrator Laurence Sisson is known for his landscape paintings of the American southwest and the Maine coast, many of which are a combination of the real and imaginary with abstract and surrealist elements. He studied at Yale Summer School and the Worcester Art Museum in Massachusetts. Having served in the military during the United States occupation of Japan after World War II, Sisson credits Japanese culture and aesthetics as a major influence on his artistic development. His work has been exhibited by numerous institutions including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the Portland Museum; the Cincinnati Art Museum; and the Columbia Museum of Fine Arts (SC), among others.
