Alfred Montgomery was an American painter and teacher who was born in Lawndale, Illinois on April 19, 1857. Montgomery was not school-educated, but self-taught and became a school teacher and principal in Vermillion, Kansas, before becoming the first teacher of drawing and lecturer on art in the public schools in Topeka, Kansas in the 1880s and 1890s. In 1906 he left the Midwest and settled in Los Angeles where he spent his remaining years.
As a specialist in farm subjects, Montgomery painted corn, watermelons, farmyards and landscapes. His works are held in the collections of Springville Museum in Utah, Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha, Nebraska; and Philbrook Art Center, Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Provenance: Commissioned directly from Montgomery in the early 20th century for a cabin Northeast of Chicago. Purchased from the descendants.

- heavy wear, chipping, cracks, and rough edges to frame; some exposed nails; in-painting and overpainting; some chipping and cracks; slight draw to canvas; dust and debris; frame is slightly rickety.
