Born in New York City, Joel Meyerowitz was significantly the only photographer given unrestricted access to Ground Zero during the wake of 9/11, and thereby was able to capture a series of images that was consolidated into a major national archive. Meyerowitz was influenced by Henri Cartier-Bresson and Robert Frank, and views himself as a street photographer working in their tradition. However, he is particularly celebrated as a pioneer in street photography for his use of color, and inspired a changing view toward color photography from resistance to a greater acceptance among audiences. Throughout his career, he has produced over a dozen books and his work has been exhibited and collected by numerous institutions including the Eastman House, the Museum of Modern Art, the Venice Biennale, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art among many others.
