Born and raised in New York City, Bill Schiffer had an early exposure to the arts. As a teenager, he attended the High School of Music & Art, a specialized magnet school in Harlem that introduced him to painting, sculpture, and collage. In 1973, Schiffer began designing jewelry with an artist’s mind. Wanting to bring functionality to art, and art to product, Schiffer proposed his designs to Bloomingdale’s, and soon after caught the attention of Saks Fifth Avenue. Schiffer’s jewelry, much like his fine art, played with the aesthetics of late 20th century art movements from pop art to abstraction. Schiffer and his wife, Sally, founded the Sally Hawkins Gallery in Soho in 1980 as a sales space for his jewelry on the ground level and exhibition space for his art above. After his wife’s passing in 2006, Schiffer closed the gallery and stopped jewelry production to focus on sculpture, painting, and murals. His work has been exhibited at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, as well as the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. His jewelry has been featured in major fashion editorials such as Vogue, Elle, and Harper’s Bazaar.
