American artist Richard Jolley was born in Kansas in 1952. When he was a young child, his family moved to Tennessee where he has lived and worked since. Jolley joined Tusculum College in 1970, studying under American glass artist and teacher, Michael Taylor. The following year, Taylor was invited by the George Peabody College – now part of Vanderbilt University – to create a studio art glass curriculum. Jolley followed his mentor and completed his BFA at George Peabody College a few years later. In 1975, Jolley established his glass art studio in Knoxville, Tennessee. He specializes in blown and hot sculpted glass art which always holds the human figure central to its composition. In 2014, Jolley completed his most famous, and one of the largest, figural glass assemblages in the world. Titled Cycle of Life: Within the Power of Dreams and the Wonder of Infinity, the piece took five years to create and was shown at the Knoxville Museum of Art. Jolley has held solo shows throughout the world including Europe, Japan, and Australia. His work is collected for various private collections, and can be seen in permanent collections of major institutions such as Carnegie Museum of Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Modern Art, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
