Item Details
Eqbal Mehdi (Pakistan, 1946 – 2008)
Untitled, 1996
Oil painting on canvas
Signed and dated 96 to upper right
Eqbal Mehdi was born in British India in 1946 and moved to Karachi, Pakistan as a young child. Mehdi grew up in a creative family with artists, writers and filmmakers, and picked up his first pen and brush at 8 years old. Mehdi contorted the motivation of realist painting by alternating in depictions between the soreness of lower class life, the material beauty of high profile sitters, and the devastation of war scenes. He also worked for various magazines including Lail-o-Nehar, Subrang Digest and Sab Rang. Before his passing in 2008, Mehdi had held a solo exhibition at the Pakistan Arts Council, received a Pride of Performance Award, and painted multiple portraits of Quaid-e-Azam, the former Governor General of Pakistan.
